IB German Language A: Language and Literature vs. IB German Language B vs. IB German ab Initio

Trying to decide which IB German course is right for you? Here's a brief guide to help you understand the differences:

• IB German Language A: Language and Literature: This course closely studies German literature and is perfect for students with strong language skills, possibly native speakers or those who have been studying German for a long time. You’ll engage with both classic and contemporary texts and learn how to analyze themes and literary techniques.

• IB German Language B: Designed for students who already have a basic understanding of German, this course focuses on improving communication skills - reading, writing, speaking, and listening. You’ll also explore real-life themes like identities, experiences, and human ingenuity to help you use German in everyday situations.

• IB German ab Initio: This course is for beginners with little or no background in German. You’ll start with the basics, learning to hold simple conversations and read basic texts. It’s an excellent starting point if you’re new to the language.

Each course offers a unique set of challenges and rewards, whether you’re analyzing literature in Language A, practicing real-world communication in Language B, or starting from scratch with ab Initio.

IB German Language A: Language and Literature Assessments:

• Paper 1: Literary analysis of unseen texts. The weighting depends on the level.
• Paper 2: Comparative essay on works studied in class. Weighting varies between SL and HL.
• Individual Oral Commentary: An internal assessment based on the analysis of a literary work.
• HL Essay (HL only): A 1,200–1,500-word critical essay on a chosen topic from the texts studied.

IB German Language B Assessments:

• Paper 1: Text-handling exercises based on four written texts. SL and HL differ in weighting.
• Paper 2: Writing tasks in response to various prompts, such as essays or letters, with more depth required at HL.
• Individual Oral: Based on a visual stimulus, students discuss themes or topics, with HL students also tackling a literary text.
• Listening Comprehension (HL only): HL students will also complete a listening component to test their understanding of spoken German.

IB German ab Initio Assessments:

• Paper 1: Various language exercises focusing on basic text comprehension.

• Paper 2: Students produce short written tasks like messages or letters, based on given prompts.

• Individual Oral: Students participate in a conversation based on a visual prompt to demonstrate their speaking skills.

Both HL and SL levels share the following themes for the IB German exam:

This oral exam, worth 25% of your final grade, allows you to showcase your speaking abilities in a 12–15-minute interactive discussion. You’ll prepare for a conversation based on either a visual stimulus or, for HL, an extract from a literary work.
