English literature course syllabus consists of these components

Readers, Writers, and Texts.

This section is composed of strictly non-literary texts, which are chosen from as wide of a variety of sources as possible, and works are selected from several literary forms. Students investigate the depth of the texts, contexts, complexities, how they operate, and how they are produced and receptive. The focus of this is developing both critical and personal responses.

Time and Space

These non-literary texts and literary works are derived from different sources to reflect the varying historical and cultural perspectives. The focus is on the context of the use of language and how such texts echo and frame society. A prominent aspect of this topic is to become fully aware of the relationship between contexts and their meanings.

Intertextuality: Connecting Texts

Both non-literary and literary texts from a wide variety of sources are chosen for students to expand their knowledge and understanding and learn how to make proper comparisons. This part of the course focuses on the relationships between texts with the option to pursue several topics known throughout the course. Students learn to develop critical thinking and responses from understanding said relationships between texts.

Paper 1 - Guided Textual Analysis

This paper, like all papers, is divided into the category of the course you are taking.

SL (Standard Level): A guided analysis of one from a choice of two previously unseen non-literary extracts

HL (Higher Level): Two conducted studies of previously unseen non-literary quotes or texts

Paper 2 - Comparative Essay

This paper is the same for both SL and HL. This case consists of students being presented with four general questions. They choose one, to which, in response, they must write a comparative essay based on two works studied in the course.

Our tutors are well familiar with all works studied in this course and will walk you through everything from A to Z.

Individual Oral

This component of the IB program consists of one individual oral. This prepared verbal response to a work originally written in the language studied and one work studied in translation that have both addressed a global issue. assessed internally by your teacher, and externally moderated by the IB at the end of the course.

HL Essay

This part of the course is only for those taking HL. Here, students write and submit an essay based on:

  • One non-literary text
  • A collection of non-literary texts (by the same author)
  • A literary text
  • A work studied during the course.

The essay must be 1200 to 1500 words in length.

From guided textual analysis to the HL essay, get the support you need to write with confidence.

FAQ

Questions about IB English tutoring.

Something else on your mind?

Talk to a coordinator on WhatsApp.

Who will my tutor be?

One of two kinds, and we pick the one your goal calls for: an IB alum who sat the same papers and came out near the top of the subject they now teach, or a professional IB teacher, in many cases an examiner. Either way they have been through the syllabus, the deadlines and the exams you are facing, which is why they adapt quickly and why lessons aim at real understanding rather than memorised formulas.

How is my tutor chosen?

Matching is what we are known for. Rather than leaving you to scroll through profiles, a coordinator looks at your subject, level, goals and the way you learn, and picks the tutor who fits.

What happens in the first lesson?

The first lesson is about finding what is really holding you back. From that, your tutor plans how to close those gaps as quickly as possible, with a strong focus on past paper questions. We will not do your homework for you; we make sure you can do it yourself.

What is in my learning plan?

Your plan is built around your target grades and your deadlines: the topics to strengthen and in which order, the coursework (IA, EE and TOK) along the way, and exam practice on real past papers before the exams. Your tutor adjusts it as you progress.

What happens after I buy a package?

You get a confirmation and we start matching you with the tutor who best fits your needs. We get back to you within 24 hours, and your tutor then contacts you to schedule the first lesson.

How do I know how many lessons I have left?

Your tutor keeps track of your hours and lets you know how many remain. At the end of every month we also email you an overview of the lessons held.

Do you have tutors in my time zone?

Almost certainly. Our tutors work across the time zones and we teach students in over 60 countries, so lessons are scheduled around your school day.

What if my tutor and I do not click?

That is not a problem. Tell us and we will match you with a second tutor, taking any special requests into account.

Let's find your tutor.

Tell us the subject and the grade you are aiming for. A coordinator replies within 24 hours with a tutor matched to you, and your first lesson starts your plan.
